My Rank...

Well, next piece of News.... I got my Half-Yearly Exam Papers today. Well, I expected it. I got 2nd Rank again! Well, that's cool! That not only gives me loads of Confidence for the Public Exam, but also a Digital Still Camera from my Dad! Well, after seeing so many Photoblogs and Photos in flickr, I just couldn't resist;) So, guys, I know a lot of you people have Cams. And, as for me, I've never seen one;) So, any Suggestions on what to buy ? Maximum budget is Rs.7K... Bye for now....

Here is my preferred list

1: Nikon Coolpix
2: Canon Powershot
3: Olympus
4: Sony

Warning1: Dont buy a kodak. Dont fall for the attractive price. They suck, big time.

Warning2: Look for optical zoom and not digital zoom

Warning3: When buying memory, buy an SD card and not an MMC card. MMCs are too slow.

Warning4: Test the camera indoors rather than outdoors. All digicams work great outdoors.

Note1: Dont bother too much about the megapixels offered. You would require a high MP cam only if you wish to take prints. I shoot at 1MP even though i have a 4.1 MP cam.

Note2: Buy Ni-Mh rechargable battries along with your cam

Note3: Check out digicamguides.com

Note4: I've included olympus and sony in the list only because your budget is quite low. My next cam would definitely be a nikon/canon and nothing else.

Yeah ...
I would double what Sharath said.

After a LOT of research, we bought a Nikon Coolpix 4300 - a 4 MP camera ... and honestly, it was worth it doing that much research.

My tips:
- Megapixels is not everything.
- Prefer a Litium Ion battery
- NEVER NEVER NEVER go for cameras which need you to pump in AA or AAA sized cells. The cameras with their flash on can eat through the batteries within minutes.
- Save some money and get an extra battery pack and extra memory.
- See if the camera you're buying has an auto timer - many cameras dont
- If possible, get one with the Macro mode, you can get some really, really awesome pictures in that mode.

And do a lot of research.
Check out reviews at http://www.cnet.com also.

Nikon's and Canons are the best. period.
Though Canon's can get expensive very fast, you will not go wrong with a coolpix - get the best coolpix you can with the budget you have.

Happy hunting :)
